Summer 2017: Hazel Scott - Honeysuckle Rose

Hazel Dorothy Scott (June 11, 1920 – October 2, 1981) was a Trinidadian-born jazz and classical pianist and singer; she also performed as herself in several films. Recognized early as a musical prodigy, Scott was given scholarships from the age of eight to study at the Juilliard School. She began performing in a jazz band in her teens and was performing on radio at age 16. In 1950, she became the first person of color to have a TV show, The Hazel Scott Show, featuring a variety of entertainment. (Wikipedia)

Spring 2017: Aaron Copland - Appalachian Spring Suite

"In surely one of the great ironies in music, a reserved, openly gay Jewish leftist from Brooklyn produced the sound we all instantly identify with the conservative values, vast landscapes and bold pioneer spirit of the rugged American settlers. How did Aaron Copland do this? Technical explanations abound, citing such hallmarks as pentatonic melodic figurations, austere harmony based upon dissonances between major and minor diatonic triads, progressive development of motivic fragments, etc. Yet, even to those for whom such terms are meaningless jargon, we hear Copland and we know that his music stands for America."

Winter 2017: Samuel Coleridge-Taylor - Ballade for Orchestra, Op.33

"Coleridge-Taylor rose to prominence in 1898, the year he turned 23, on the strength of two works.  The first was his  Ballade in A Minor.  It was commissioned for the prestigious annual Three Choirs Festival at the suggestion of the British composer Edward Elgar (1857-1934).  The piece was a critical and popular success."
